Break the number apart before adding
Adding two awkward numbers directly is where most people slow down. Multiply by 5 using 10 instead
Multiplying by 10 just adds a zero, and 5 is exactly half of 10. So for any number times 5, multiply by 10 first, then cut the result in half. 24 x 5 turns into 240 divided by 2, which is 120. This one holds for any number, decimals included, and it's faster than the direct multiplication almost every time.
Multiply by 9 by multiplying by 10 and subtracting
The same idea works for 9, just in the other direction. Since 9 is one less than 10, multiply by 10 and subtract the original number once. 23 x 9 becomes 230 minus 23, which is 207. It reads slower written out than it feels once you've done it a few times, since both steps are things you already do instantly.
Square any number ending in 5 in two steps
This one looks like a party trick but the math behind it is simple. For a number ending in 5, take the digit(s) in front of the 5, multiply that by itself plus one, then put 25 on the end. For 35: the front digit is 3, and 3 x 4 is 12, so the answer is 1225. Check it against 35 x 35 and it matches exactly, every time, for any number ending in 5.
Multiply two-digit numbers by 11 without a calculator
For a two-digit number, add its two digits together and drop that sum in the middle. 23 x 11: the digits are 2 and 3, their sum is 5, so the answer is 253. This breaks once the middle sum reaches 10 or higher (you'd need to carry the 1), but for most everyday multiplication it's the fastest trick on this list.
Find a percentage by finding 10% first
Almost every percentage question becomes easy once you find 10% of the number, since that's just moving the decimal point. From there, other percentages are quick multiples or fractions of that number. A 15% tip on 80: 10% is 8, half of that (5%) is 4, add them together for 12. This scales to any percentage once 10% is in hand.
